Wallace Falls July 20th 2002

Friday evenings weather report called for a nice weekend. Saturday afternoon was my CWU CS Dept reunion and I wanted to do a hike somewhere close to home, but what? I had heard that Wallace Falls was a relatively moderate hike and it was 6 miles from my house. Fits the bill. I know just needed someone to BS with on the trail and I knew my buddy Dave would be game. Gave him a call and he accepted my offer. The next morning we were at the trailhead around 9:00. And then we were on our way. Right off the back while walking under the powerlines, we were rewarded with views of Mt. Baring and Gunn Peak. There were two paths, the railroad grade trail and the Woody trail. We choose to do the Woody trail. The trail pretty much hugged Wallace river all the way up. You spend the whole hike in the forest and there are 3 falls to see, which get better the higher on the trail you are. The hike is pretty moderate. The only views that you get (Summertime) is from the middle falls and what you see is Gold Bar, Humpback Mt (Mt. Persis's westerly neighbor), and the Skykomish river. I was fine with this because I enjoyed looking at the falls, and the cliffs below them. For the most part I heard that the middle falls are the best part of the hike. I have to disagree, the upper falls are bigger and the drop off from top to bottom looks better (my opinion). I think that part of it is because you had to hike longer to enjoy the final view. There is a posted sign at the top that tells the story of two young women who decided that the hike to the upper falls wasn't enough for them and continued hiking beyond and ended up getting lost (Always carry the 10 essentials!). Good reading and an excuse to regain your second wind for the trek down. Decent wasn't too eventfull, lots of people with small children at the lower falls. Back at the car by noon, and off to Zekes for burgers!
