Heybrook Lookout March 28th 2004

I had limited time for hiking this Sunday and Heybrook fit the bill. This was my first time here and when driving to the trailhead I blew past it and had to turn around a mile after. Look for a small gravelled parking area on the left(eastbound) about a half mile after the Index expresso chateau. Any sightings of parked cars should supply the clue. This hike may be short (1.3 miles), but it starts viciously with steep switchbacks and stays that way for a good portion of the hike through the dense forest. ¾ of the way up the trail eases up and remains a leisurely stroll until you reach the lookout stairs. If you take climb the stairs (80-100 feet?) to the observation deck you will be rewarded with excellent views of surrounding peaks. Great views of Index, Persis, Phily, Baring, and Merchant. Unfortunately Gunnshy and Gunn Peak are slightly obscured by trees close to the lookout. The top level of the lookout is pad locked, but I guess you can rent it out for the night for around $40. I'm happy that they reopened it the vandalism that occured a few years ago. Took me just over 30 minutes to reach the top, 15 to 20 minutes to get down.

Hike took me just over 1/2 hr up to the LO, and 15-20 minutes down.

Getting There

From Seattle go northbound on I-5 to Everett. From I-5 merge onto US-2 E via exit number 194 toward SNOHOMISH/WENATCHEE. Drive east through Monroe and continue one-two miles east of Mount Index. The trailhead starts at a gravelled parking lot off the side of Hwy 2 to you left.
From Bellevue go northbound on I-405 then merge onto WA-522 E via exit number 23 toward MONROE/WENATCHEE. The road then joins U.S. 2 at Monroe. At the junction turn left onto U.S. 2. See above for directions after Monroe.

Northwest Forest Pass is need to park there.
